Elias Vazouras, a student of the Laboratory of Materials of theDepartment of Mechanical Engineering at the University of Thessaly, received the prize for best oral presentation at EUROMAT19. The award was given to E: Energy, Transport & Environment at the FEMS EUROMAT19 conference, held September 1-5, 2019 in Stockholm.

May 2017

The journal article "Alloy Design Based on Computational Thermodynamics and Multi-objective Optimization: The Case of Medium-Mn Steels" by PhD Researcher John S. Aristeidakis was featured on Advances in Engineering as "key scientific article contributing to science and engineering research excellence". The findings were published in Metallurgical and Materials Transactions A in May 2017. The Key Scientific Article by Advances in Engineering can be found here.

July 2016

Maria-Ioanna Tzini, a 5^th year undergraduate student, represented the Laboratory of Materials at the Junior Euromat 2016 Conference, which took place in July 2016 at EPFL, Lausanne. The selection was the outcome of a competition between students who work on their diploma theses at the LoM. Maria-Ioanna is working on the modeling of austenite evolution and solute partitioning in the intercritical range of a Medium-Mn steel.

Ο φοιτητής του 8ου εξαμήνου Αλέξανδρος Σεραφείμ επελέγη να εκπροσωπήσει το Εργαστήριο Υλικών στο διεθνές συνέδριο Junior Euromat 2012, που θα διεξαχθεί τον Ιούλιο στην Λωζάνη της Ελβετίας και συγκεκριμένα στο Ecole Polytechnique Federale de Lausanne (EPFL). Η επιλογή έγινε μετά από διαγωνισμό μεταξύ τεσσάρων φοιτητών που εκπονούν την διπλωματική τους εργασία στο Εργαστήριο. Τα έξοδα συμμετοχής θα καλυφθούν από το Εργαστήριο Υλικών. Ο Αλέξανδρος Σεραφείμ εκπονεί την εργασία του με θέμα την ανάπτυξη μοντέλου για την περιγραφή της εξέλιξης διασποράς σωματιδίων -  ενδομεταλλικών ενώσεων σε μεταλλικά κράματα με στόχο την περιγραφή της μεταβολής της μηχανικής αντοχής μετά από θερμικές κατεργασίες ή συγκολλήσεις.

Alexandros Serafeim, a 4^th year undergraduate student, represented the Laboratory of Materials at the Junior Euromat 2012 Conference, which took place in July 2012 at EPFL, Lausanne. The selection was the outcome of a competition between students who work on their diploma theses at the LoM. Alexandros is working on the modeling of precipitation phenomena in metallic alloys and uses his model for the prediction of the strength of the alloys after heat treatment or welding.

December 2010

Our undergraduate student Stefanos Athanasiadis has been successful on the application of the Friction Stir Welding (FSW) method in the Laboratory of Materials (LoM). Stefanos designed the FSW tool and supervised the machining and heat treatment of the tool. Successful FSW joints have been produced in Al-alloys. The joints are being characterized by metallography and microhardness testing.

September 2010

Our graduate Despoina Vriami was accepted at the Department of Metallurgy and Materials Engineering of the Katholieke Universiteit Lueven (KUL) in Belgium. Despoina will work towards a Ph.D degree under the supervision of Prof. Van der Biest on the processing of advanced ceramic piezoelectric compounds. Despoina completed her diploma thesis at the Laboratory of Materials of the Department of Mechanical Engineering, University of Thessaly on the laser welding of aluminum alloys.
