Porous Tantalum foam (trabecular metal) has been increasingly used as a structural scaffold in orthopedic applications such as cartilage resurfacing, bone graft substitute and pressfit or cementless components in total joint arthroplasty. Bone ingrowth is essential in determining the structural integrity of the bone-implant joint. Studies of bone ingrowth have been performed using canine or other non-human models. Information on the mechanisms of human bone ingrowth into trabecular metal implants is rather limited. In this work, at LoM, we have studied, qualitatively, human bone ingrowth into a porous tantalum monoblock acetabular cup using optical microscopy, scanning electron microscopy and energy dispersive X-ray analysis.
